The third season will be based upon the first half of “A Storm of Swords,” the third novel in George R. R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series. And while “Game of Thrones” has attracted legions of new fans along with readers of Martin’s books, there are still people who may not be familiar with the story before jumping in. Towards that end, HBO has created a new 14 minute special entitled “A Gathering Storm,” that mixes clips from the second season as the cast recounts the experiences of their respective characters. Presumably the cast commentary was shot during the third season, as Peter Dinklage has Tyrion’s scar on his face during his turn to talk to the camera. Among the highlights of the second year were the rise and fall of Tyrion Lannister, Jon Snow’s adventures beyond the wall, the battle of Blackwater and Arya’s attempts to free herself and gain vengeance for her family.
